Sketch to Stretch

For my sketch to stretch students will be reading the book Goldie Locks and the Three Bears (Flora Annie Seel 1922). Goldie Locks and the Three Bears was a story about three bears who lived together in a house. Wee bear, Middle-sized bear, and Great Big Bear who each had a bowl of porridge, according to their sizes. The little girl who lived on the other side of the woods was named Goldilocks, passed by the Bears house and saw there was porridge in the house. She made herself right at home as she went into the house, Great Big Bear's porridge was too hot for her, the Middle-Sized Bear's porridge was too cold, and the Little Wee Bears porridge was just right. After eating the porridge Goldilocks was feeling sleepy, so she went and tried everyones chair out and found that Little Wee Bear's chair was just right. Now Goldilocks was really needing a rest so she tired out everyones bed and Little Wee Bear's was just right for her as well, she fell right asleep. When the bears came home they noticed everyone's porridge has been eaten, the chairs had been sat on, and they saw Goldilocks in bed.

I think going about this story with the sketch to stretch could be a lot of fun. I would have my students draw each of the characters, and have them explain one feeling they are feeling. Either draw another picture of their feelings or write it. Once the students have drawn their sketches, they will share them with the class. When they have all shared, as a class we will go over everyones sketch to stretch drawing. I think having all the students involved in everyones drawing is important so that students can help each other out. It is also important for students to know how to dive deeper into their stories and make the stories something of their own. The students can open their minds to new things and show their creativity in the classroom and outside of the classroom. Sketch to stretch is also something you can use if you have many students who are visual learners. They can learn more by pictures than just all words.

Here are some examples I found for the sketch to stretch.

Overall, sketch to stretch can be so much fun with students as their imagination keeps flowing.

  1. Allie, I agree that doing a sketch to stretch with Goldilocks and the Three bears would be fun. I like your idea of having students share their sketches and ideas, I think that this is really beneficial for students because they get to collaborate and learn from one another. Additionally, I think that it would be fun for the teacher to do a sketch to stretch and then share hers with the class or maybe even do one as an entire class. Great post!

  2. I love your book choice and letting students share their work. It would also be neat to let them tell the story using their sketches as a prop.
