Meeting Students Needs While Setting Boundaries

What characteristics does the teacher possess that you'd like to develop? what strengths and weaknesses are revealed for the students described? how would you met the needs of these students?

The characteristics of the teacher that stood out to me and what I would like to use in my future classroom are how she has her room set up. Everything seems to be in a place, and it also shows how she cares about the students and their needs. She has listed above the white board her classroom rules which are, “Be respectful and helpful. Be prepared. Be responsible.” Having the classroom rues above where the students are looking every day is something I would like to think about, they already know the classroom rules, but it is a reminder every time. Something that caught my eye was when the book said that Kim was not only a teacher but a student too, because she learns something new every day. I strive to be able to learn not only about my students but with my students. Something else is, knowing to be flexible when there are times that could mess up the student’s schedule. Some students need a strict schedule while others do not. That is ok, we need to always keep those students in mind and stay calm when plans change. I like the way the teacher handles her classroom. She is very organized and understands her students using powerful words to help them all stay on the same page together. Some of the strengths that I saw in the passage were how well her students were doing when they had to be flexible. They were using their own ideas and making it something that was like what they wanted, even though it was not even close to what they thought they were having for lunch that day. Another strength I noticed from the students was not only how flexible they were but also how young they were with that strong of a being flexible student they are. Each student is different so really, they all have their strengths and weaknesses, but as a class they seem to have pretty much the same. As for the weaknesses, it seems that at the beginning of the school day, and the end of the school day is where the students tend to get very distracted or excited. This is also it seems to be the time students really get to talk to each other, so it can get a little out of hand. Which I think this means it is good for your class to have your classroom rules posted so everyone can see them for a reminder. Another weakness I can see is that sometimes not only do kids have some trouble staying focused, but they also need to know that Kim is the teacher, even though sometimes we do not always see eye to eye, the students still need to understand why they have a teacher in the first place. I think meeting the needs of these students can be challenging at first. Being a teacher means you need to try to get to know your students as best as you can. There are many reasons for that, not only will it help when you are helping the student with school work, but, it can also help when students are having a hard time at home or school or both. Knowing our students is a very big deal no matter what grade. In the passage it talked about making connections. I think trying to make connections multiple ways is amazing. Teachers can make connections at any point during class, it could be as simple as making a connection with your student by both of you having dogs. I believe the small things like that can improve your teaching skills and your learning skills about your students, and even yourself. I also found it to be interesting that in this passage it talks about students being giggly and not paying attention at the beginning and end of the day, which is very far, but I think if you have a good connection and relationship with students, (depending on the day) that could sometimes change things. Overall, being a teacher is important and some take aways from this passage are that yes we have students who struggle but we need to be able to accommodate and know our students.

  1. I also liked how the teacher had her classroom setup. I think that it's so important for teachers to be organized in their classroom. Not only does it allow for things to run smoothly, but it also makes students feel more comfortable and helps promote a positive learning environment. Also, I like how you mentioned where the story said that teachers are also students. I honestly believe that good teachers are lifelong learners and are always striving to expand their knowledge and grow as not only a teacher but also a person. Lastly, I loved how much the teacher in the story made an effort to get to know her students, such as their likes and interests in education and outside of school. This is something that I will definitely do as a future educator.
